Lyon and its region
Lyon, former capital of the Gauls retained a remarkable architectural heritage, ranging from Roman times to the 21st century, and through the Renaissance. As such, the neighbourhoods of Vieux Lyon, of the Hill of Fourvière, the peninsula and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse, with their famous "traboules" are registered on the Unesco World Heritage list.
Lyon, city of gastronomy, distinguishes itself thanks to many typical "bouchons" (restaurants) serving traditional and popular meals, and its famous gastronomic restaurants held by Michelin starred chefs.
Léon Daudet wrote that "Lyon is a city surrounded by three major rivers: the Rhone, the Saône and the Beaujolais, which is never silty or dry".
Among grands crus of Beaujolais: Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin à vent, Régnié, Saint Amour...and other wines with the appellation "Côtes–du–Rhône" covering a vineyard of 44,000 hectares.
